Where's Teddy Now?

Batu Belig (Day 001)

We had been, on our zeroth day, on the road for 24 hours. (You sleep so well on a plane, we were just so refreshed!)

Met at the airport by our AirBnB hosts, Ardi and Larry, we hustled ourselves to the beach for some nourishment. Our first Balinese meal, on the beach, and before one of the most brilliant sunsets of my experience.

This must be a trope.

In fact, it was one of the best ever experienced by Larry, and he’s lived for 20 years.

Words cannot explain the sleep deprived euphoria that one experiences when faced with the depth of colour and texture like this. This photo does not do it justice. Mixed with great food, good company, and cold beer (our first Bintang of many), it presented as good omen for the next five months ahead of us.

On the way home, we wandered the night markets catering the snack hungry locals and found this fellow, selling roast corn.

If you’ve ever been to SE Asia, then the harshness of light, like this at night, strikes you. In a sea of darkness, the gas (or more often, fluorescent) light cuts through the black, grabs you by the scruff, and screams “this does not set the appropriate mood!”

We passed on the corn this night, telling ourselves like we so often did, that there will be another day. There were (other days), but we never found another at the exact right time. And when we so craved it, at the end of a long day of waterfalls or rice terraces, not once were we able to find it.

Ted’s Travel Rule No. 21: if you see something you like, get it then and there. It doesn’t matter how long you’re in-country, you will have lost your opportunity forever.

We have so far travelled…

This is a 163 part Blog series, chronicling my family’s Le Grand Voyage II, through Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong, Jordan, Cyprus, and Greece. A 163 post reflection on our trip, highlighting some touristy and distinctly no-touristy photography, a sampling of the 20 000 photos I snapped on three cameras.
