Where's Teddy Now?

Season

as in, Concert Season. ‘Tis the season indeed, and it’s shaping up to be stupidly wonderful.

It all a started two weeks ago with Matthew Good at the Jack Singer. Seats in Row D, photos on Flickr.

Last night it was The Weakerthans at Mac Hall.

Holy shit, is Johnny K looking all grown up and chick magnetty. They’re singing well too, with about half of their new album on the playlist, and every single song you can name from their old catalog – The Reasons, Cat Named Virtue, Fire Door, Left and Leaving, Our Retired Explorer, Benediction (my personal fave among faves), Psalm… well, you get the idea.

For one who’s never seen the full band before (sad, but true) it was an amazing show. All the hits, and the new stuff rocks pretty well as well.

And there was an added bonus – the opening act. See, we had intended to arrive after the opener (it’s a bit tiring putting in ten hours and getting up twice a night with baby). Alas, we lucked out; The Last Town Chorus didn’t start until 8:30.

Last Town Chorus? I’m sitting browsing my email when they take the stage, a gal with a steel lap guitar and herr buddy with a big fat dreadnaught acoustic. It’s an amazing sound, an unforgettable sound, and I knew I’d heard it. Guy sitting next to me asks, to which I shrug my shoulders. And then then begin in on a David Bowie cover of Modern Love. And the band name drops instantly into the head.

See, we’re catching up on our Grey’s Anatomy, and near the end of season two, they use it. And (as ashamed as I am to admit this) I liked it. Not ashamed for liking it, but for liking the music off Grey’s.

But that’s another story. (I’m also downloading music featured on commercials – yech!)

Anyhow, a great evening. But wait, that’s only the start. Even though we’re batting 2 for 2, there’s lots more in the concert headlights. Witness:

  • October 13 – New Pornographers
  • November 20 – Stars
  • November 2 – Modest Mouse
  • December 8 – Matthew Good – Banff
  • December 14 – Broken Social Scene

A star studded lineup if ever there was one. It’s going to be a good season.
