Day 185 – Water Coconut Village

Can Thanh, Vietnam

About three kilometers south of Hoi An is the Water Coconut village of Can Thanh.

It’s an eye opening experience to wander the alleys and streets of these little towns. Sometimes you feel like you’re motoring through peoples yards (you aren’t), or otherwise intruding on life. The smiles and waves we get suggest otherwise. We take a few photos, but try not to be obnoxious.

Mostly we keep our eyes wide open.

The juxtaposition of desperate living conditions with what can only be described as palatial mansions, in the middle of “nowhere” is very odd to us. We asked about this in Cambodia, and found out that it’s usually government officials. We suppose that they wold prefer to be the “big fish in a little pond”, and that it’s a status thing.

We were walking back to the motorcycle, and I began running ahead of the girls. Tina wondered what was up before she saw this lady on a bike up ahead, and it all made sense.
