Nellie Bly, Last Tie

When Nellie Bly, the final Tie
That bound the earth had knotted,
The World looked on and cried “Well done,
The Globe was bravely trotted.”

All of this to say that I’ve just started in on a new book, A Brief Introduction of Globalization, by Alex MacGillivray. The clever among you will notice that I spelled it the British/Canadian way, up top.

Nellie Bly, on the other hand, is seen as on the earlier proponents of the Global Village. She travelled around the globe, beginning and ending in New York City, in 72 days, and did much to popularize the notion world travel. This in 1888.

Her book is available in an online version, over here: Around the world in seventy two days.

Another one to read.

And from the the “isn’t it ironic” department, she died of influenza. The great pandemic post world war one was able to spread so easily because of increased travel and mobility.
