Day 169 – Dedication

A garden requires patient labor and attention. Plants do not grow merely to satisfy ambitions or to fulfill good intentions. They thrive because someone expended effort on them.

Liberty Hyde Bailey, quoted above, was one of the first to rediscover the findings of Gregor Mendel. Maybe even the first; that’s how I know the name. Mendel’s the guy who discovered how Darwin’s evolution by natural selection actually happens, by the mixing of discrete genetic information called genes.

I’m a biologist by training; this is my bread and butter.

It’s fascinating history, and an important story in the history of science. But I’m fairly certain, without making any sort of judgement, that this fellow just loves plants.
